[Yoon Minsoo] 윤민수 in Vibe

I'm sure you've heard of this dude. Likely, you heard of him at about the exact same time I found out about him, when he showed up as one of the new singers to join TVprogram "I Am a Singer". My first thought was "who's that guy? kinda cute, good built... looks good..." Then I found out that his name was Yoon Minsoo.

Yoon Minsoo, born on April 1980, made his debut in 1998 as one of the original member of the group "Four Men" (포맨). He stepped out as member of the group not long after their second album, but stayed with the company and started to be a song writer and producer for the remaining Four Men starting from the third album. (My research found that the current members of the group are all "new" members, leaving no traces of the original formation)

In 2002, Yoon came back to the music industry in a new group called "Vibe" (바이브) through their first album titled "Afterglow". The group originally had three members: Yoon Minsoo, Ryu Jae-Hyeon (류재현), and Yoo Seonggyu (유성규). Yoo stepped out of the group after their second album and sing solo as "Noblesse", leaving on Ryu and Yoon in the team.

Despite his so coy-looking style we see in "I am a Singer", I find his previous pictures from Vibe to be "richer" in expression~ I wonder which one is the real him~ ^^

Although I hadn't known them for long, it seems that Vibe's 3rd album especially made a breakthrough for them. Yoon Minsoo sung two most representative songs of this album on his first appearance in "I am A Singer": "That man, That woman" and "Liquor".

[Vibe] 그남자 그여자 (feat Jang Hyejin)

[Vibe] 술아야
(during live concert, inviting an audience on the stage~ what a lucky girl ^^)
Also a surprise by the beginning of this video is that the keyboardist is Jang Jiwon (장지원) who's a regular session keyboardist for Boohwal concert as well~ :)

Anyways~ I'm sorry I couldn't really gather that much about him~ to be honest, I don't have the time to (T_T) I'm in tight schedule... Yoon Minsoo had only been in "I am A Singer" in one "set" now, in the competition singing "그리움만 쌓이네" (originally by 여진, 1995) and "사랑 그 쓸쓸함에 대하여" (originally by Yang Hee-Eun, 1991). Out of all his songs choice and performances, the guy really got me. He's got depth~ I wish him success without loosing any of the depth he has now.

Best wishes and fingers crossed~~ Yoon Min Soo!! :)

Also check out Vibe's 4th album "Vibe in Praha" which was released in 2010, featuring the songs "미친거니" (Are you Crazy?) and "다시 와주라" (Come again for me). Check out the later below~! ^_^

[Green Face] Jeong Dan

He's a unique one. Born with the name 김병건, he debut as Boohwal's 8th vocalist with the stage name "Jeong Dan" (정단). He was the voice in Boohwal's 9th album "Over the Rainbow" released in 2003.

At the same time, Kim Tae Won was also in charge of the OST for the movie "A Moment to Remember" (머리속의 지우게). The title song of this 9th album titled "Beautiful Truth" (아름다운 사실) was used as the main OST of the movie.

Below is a clip of Boohwal performance in Concert 7080 featuring "Tree Bicycle  (나무자전거) performing Beautiful Truth~ :)

Coming out of Boohwal, Jeong Dan adopted "Green Face" as stage name and work on solo projects.
Among movie/drama OSTs Green Face participated in:

Please find below 2 songs of Green Face I can't help my heart bumping everytime I hear it~~"Love is a friend of longing" which is the OST for "Youthful Beauty" and "Horang Nabi" which was originally sung by Kim Hueng-Kuk and re-arranged by Green Face himself (which you can find in his second album) sung live in Olleh Square Talk Concert past 24 July 2011. My separate accounts on google made it difficult to link it from youtube thus the live video is not so clear. Go to youtube for a better quality.

Wow I just realized that I really don't know much about Jeong Dan judging from how short this post is T_T
Well, the guy just have this wonderful voice, and what more is needed from a singer, don't you think? ^^

Note that he seems to be the oldest among the four vocalist in "누구나 사랑을 한다" since they all call him "hyeong" although my naver search resulted that Park Wan Kyu is older.. probably there's some late registration or what not going on there.. I'll edit this part of the post once I collected more info about him (which is not likely since he's really not "out there" on the web). If you're interested in this guy though, you can check his official fan club~ :)

Lastly,  a song from Green Face's second album, "a story I want to tell my lover" (우리 애인에게 하고 싶은 이야기) sung live in Olleh Square Talk Concert, also on 24July 2011 (I'm going again this August 28th btw~ ^^)

Hot Potato [뜨거운 감자]

This was actually a posting I wrote last year that landed me with free tickets for Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival. I watched Hot Potato's concert live about a month ago, and they just, simply, rock out!

뜨거운 감자Hot Potato, is a duo consist of Kim C (guitar+vocal) and 고범준 (bass).
The band was formed in 2000, and despite the long 10 years they've walked in Korean music industry, they've yet reached the peak until only recently.

Kim C, on the other hand, is more known for his appearance in a popular variety show called "2 days 1 night" (1박2일). It's not that I like him because of his performance in this TV show, but it does help to get to know what kind of person he is. And personally, I find him a very intelligent and humanist person. His genuineness is incomparable to a lot of Korean artists. I respect him for that.

Now, 뜨거운 감자 has released 5 albums:
1집: Navi (2000)
2집: New Turn (2003)
3집: 연기 (年記) (2006)
4짐: The Journey of Cultivating a Potato Field (2008)
5집: 시소 (Seesaw) (2010)
Now, I personally think they should have gotten the attention since the 3rd album. My personal favourite from this album is "좌절금지" (Passing Out Forbidden). The title, for one, really catches your attention; and the melody is also easy listening. 뜨거운감자's music is one that does not ask you to think much, easy listening, but when you think about it, you'd find that it's really rich with meanings.
The music video is also fun~enjoy! ^^*

뜨거운감자 (좌절금지)

From this 3rd album, you have to also listen to the songs "Today Is", "봄바람 따라간 여인", and "청춘".
Now, the fourth album is one that cost 뜨거운감자 the least loss than what they've gain since their first debut. That's right, this band is not popular in Korea - not because of their music, coz you saw and heard how cool they are - but because Korea is a land where only pretty face survives... sad, yeah. The video below features a song from their 4th album, titled 생각 (Thought), brought live in a TV program. By the end of the song, he's sharing a bit of the story of 뜨거운감자 and also how they practically have not made any benefits so far playing music, but their doing it coz they love doing it~^^

뜨거운감자 (생각)

Now, 2010 is the time for 뜨거운감자 to rise. Go Go Go!! ^_^
The album "Seesaw" (시소) receives the best response 뜨거운감자 had ever received so far. In fact, I hear this song in every 5 meters now when I'm walking downtown in Seoul~ ^^
I don't wanna spoil it for you, so just watch the video~

뜨거운감자 (고백)

I wish their success for more years ahead. Kim C rock! 뜨거운감자 화이팅!

Need more convincing? Another live stage of 뜨거운감자  with a line from the 3rd album, 봄바람 따라간 여인 (it's my personal favorite!) ^^*

뜨거운감자 (봄바람 따라간 여인, 좌절금지)

뜨거운감자 많이많이 사랑해주시고 같이 응원해주세요~~!!^ㅇ^

Park Wan Kyu

Born in 1973, he debuted as Boohwal's vocalist. His first album was a compilation of Boohwal's songs "Aesop's Brush" (이솝의 붓). He was the voice of Boohwal's 5th album "Discovery of Fire" (불의 발견) released in 1997. He made his name known with the title song "Lonely Night" as with his clear voice & strong vocal.

It was told that Kim Tae Won was told of Park Wan Kyu, and heard him singing in an American base camp inside of Seoul, singing Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog." His voice amazed Kim Tae Won who invited him to sing for Boohwal which was looking for a new vocal at the time.

You can find out more about Boohwal's 5th album here (click), featuring among others "Lonely Night", "Discovery of Fire", Magician (마술사), "Sad Wish" (슬픈 바램), and "Trust" (믿음). Personally, every single song in this album is a masterpiece. Park Wan Kyu's voice, was simply, .. in-express-able.

Lonely Night is one of a "must" song in every Boohwal's concert. Despite having had so many vocals over the years, no body could ever sing "Lonely Night" as Park Wan Kyu did.

He only stayed with Boohwal for less than a year, and released his first solo album in 1999 titled "1000 Years of Love" (천년지애). The title song, "Love of 1000 Years" really highlighted his high toned voice.

His second album "Vigorous Hunting (엽기발랄) was released in 2000, with the title song "After Love" (사랑한 후에). The album did not give as good a result as the previous album, despite the good quality. The changes in Korean music industry is among the reasons to it, as well as the economic downturn started in late 1990'.

The following albums he released did not make much difference: 3rd Album (2002) "It's Now or Never", 4th Album (2006) "Exodus", and 1999-2006 "Best Album". For me, it's quite a question mark why he excluded his time in Boohwal in his "Best Album". His relationship with Kim Tae Won, the leader of Boohwal, remained good and in tact though. They enjoy fishing together, and in fact, the song "Lonely Night" was composed and written by Kim Tae Won during one of his fishing journeys.

He also works a lot with the musician Kim Kyung-Ho (김경호); he did some featuring for Kim Kyung-Ho's album, including a duet remake of Boohwal's "Story of You and the Rain" (비와 당신의 이야기) in 2009. Other than that, Park Wan Kyu also sung some drama OST and appeared in Musicals such as "Maria" and "Jesus Christ".

In 2007, Park Wan Kyu released 2 digital singles, "Black Secret" (검은 비밀) and Love Song "Bad Guy" (못된 남자). In the latter album, Kim Tae Won presented a song titled "Because I Love You" (사랑해서 사랑해서" to him - note that it's a different "Because I Love You" from the one presented to "Qualifications of Men" (남자의 자격).

10 years of time has changed a lot of Park Wan Kyu's voice. He still has his special color, but the tone has changed much. The song eventually did not go far, but that to say that Boohwal was not getting as much attention as it's getting today as well.

With the increase of recognition towards Kim Tae Won and Boohwal from the beginning of 2009, the band's going really well and started various projects this year. One of the projects Boohwal attempted was Boohwal Collaboration + (Plus). The first "plus" was Park Wan Kyu. In this collaboration project, instead of Boohwal's current vocalist, Park Wan Kyu sung the song "Secret" (비밀) with Boohwal. The song rose to the tops of all music charts in Korea the first weeks it was released.

It's the beginning of Park Wan Kyu's return to Korea's entertainment industry. Following "Secret", along with 2 other previous vocals of Boohwal, he also sung "Everybody Love" (누구나 사랑을 하다) as the second part of Boohwal Collaboration Project.

As side effects, he appears a lot in TV shows now, either related to Kim Tae Won and Boohwal or not. One regular show he will be doing for a while now is the sequel of "Harmony" Project by the "Qualifications of Men" (남자의 자격) TV show. As Kim Tae Won's "right hand", he will be assisting Kim Tae Won being the conductor of the choir. You can definitely see his soft side here in the show.

You can find some more about his appearance in the show through this link (click).

I wish people could recognize him more. He's many to share with the world, and really, looks doesn't tell you nothing. And on top of his heart, I appreciate his work and sincerity. Park Wan Kyu, my best wishes for you!

Started in 1985 with Kim Tae-Won (김태원) as the leader. He plays the guitar and wrote most of the band’s songs. There were originally three members, with Kim Jong-Seo (김종서) as the vocalist. Back then, they did not have their own songs, so they played “copy-music”, famous western rock songs, such as “Stairway to Heaven” and such. The band was called “The End” back then.
Kim Jong-Seo left “The End” in 1986, and Lee Seung-Cheul (이승철) joined the band as they was re-born with the name “Boohwal” (부활). They released the first album in 1986. “Heeya” (희야) became a hit song in Korea, but few people remember this band behind the song. Lee Seung-Chul’s name overcome the whole band, and a lot remember this song as his debut song instead of the band’s. Lee stayed with the band until the second album that featured the song “The Last Concert” (마지막 콘서트) and left for his solo carrier.
Kim Tae-Won, the leader and the main motor of the band fell into the darkest period of his life wherein he came to know marijuana. A new light came to shine again for Boohwal as Kim Tae-Won met Kim Je-Gi (김재기), a young man with exquisite voice that brought back Boohwal to fame with the hit song The more I love” (사랑할수록). Too bad Kim Je-Gi died in a traffic accident one day after his first demo recording. The vocal position was transfered to his brother, who were said to have just the same voice as him. Kim Jae-Hee (김재희) stayed with Boohwal until the band’s 4th album.
After that, Boohwal had changed vocalist on every other album. Park Wan-Gyu (박완규) recorded the 5th album(1997) with Boohwal, with the hit song “Lonely Night“.
Kim Ki-Yeon (김기연) recorded the 6th album, with the title song “Possibility” (가능성). Drummer  Che Je-Min (채제민)joined the band starting from this album. Bassist Seo Jae-Hyuck (서재혁) joined the band with the release of this very album in 1999.
Lee Seong-Uk (이성욱) recorded the 7th album, and Lee Seung-Chul signed a contract with Boohwal for his 2002 concert and recorded the 8th album. “Never Ending Story“, the title song of the 8th album is said to be one of Korea’s eternal songs.. Jeong Dan (정단), Boohwal’s vocalist from 2003-2004, recorded the 9th album, with the title song “Beautiful Truth” (아름다운 사실) taken for a movie soundtrack (내 머리속의 지우개 – “eraser inside my head”), Boohwal was back on Korea’s pop music track.
In 2005, Jeong Dong-Ha (정동하) (real name Jeong Je-Hwan-정재환) became Boohwal’s 9th vocalist and have loyally stayed with the band since. The young Jeong Dong-Ha have also succeeded in attracting young fans(teenagers and youths in their 20s) in the Korean music industry which is crowded by boybands and girlbands.
Starting in 2008/2009, Boohwal’s leader Kim Tae-Won started to show up on some Korean variety shows, gaining even more fame for the band. His long hair and very bad health condition has earned him the nickname “national grandmother” (국민 할머니) – although associated with a grandmother, gaining “national” nickname is not a small thing in homogenic patriotic Korea.
